Social Norms and Values in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice free essay sample

In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen makes brilliant use of her characters and their situations to paint an image of society in the early 19th century. At the same time, the norms and values which she presents bear some remarkable similarities to today’s world. Social norms are defined by Kendall, Murray, and Linden in Sociology in Our Times as â€Å"established rules of behavior or standards of conduct† (664), while a social value is defined as â€Å"a collective idea about what is right or wrong, good or bad, and desirable or undesirable in a particular culture† (668). These terms can be used fairly interchangeably; they both mean basically the same thing, with norms being the actual behaviors that are dictated by values. Such norms and values are shown in a multitude of ways throughout Pride and Prejudice. There are norms associated with most every aspect of society, including the norms for class, money, gender, and marriage most commonly explored in Austen’s novels. Austen shows society’s values both through satire and through presenting what she considers to be the better alternative. The society of Austen’s time no doubt differs from today in many ways; however, when the actual values of society are closely examined, it becomes apparent that there are some fundamental similarities. Money and class had a very strong influence on what was deemed ‘proper’ during the 19th century. The higher one’s class and economic level, the more highly respected one would be in society. Darcy, with his ? 10 000 a year and landed gentry background, is the social superior of the Bennets, who make only ? 2000 a year and have connections to relations in the lower class. This social superiority is part of why Darcy initially considers Elizabeth to be an unsuitable match for him. In his first proposal to her, he asks her â€Å"Could you expect me to rejoice in the inferiority of your connections? To congratulate myself on the hope of relations, whose condition in life is so decidedly beneath my own? † (168). His words emphasize the marked difference in their social standing and clarify for the reader how undesirable a marriage between different classes were considered at the time. Darcy is, at this point, very much the product of his society. As A. Walton Litz states in his article â€Å"Into the Nineteenth Century: Pride and Prejudice†, Darcy is â€Å"mindful of his relationship to society, proud of his social place, and aware of the restrictions that inevitably limit the free spirit† (65). Money gave a person power, and in many ways was considered the most important factor in a person’s social standing. Lady Catherine de Bourgh, for all her rudeness, is rich and therefore powerful and respected. The Bingleys, in spite of their comparatively low birth, have amassed a good deal of money which has allowed them to move up in society. A preoccupation with money, however, is certainly not unique to Austen’s time. Today, money still remains one of the primary indicators of a person’s place in society, and is often used to make over-generalized statements about people in the same way that Darcy looked down on the Bennets’ lack of wealth. For example, one of the foremost questions people ask each other when they meet for the first time is ‘what do you do? ’ The other person’s answer provides numerous clues about the person’s wealth, status, and power. The person who answers ‘doctor’ is immediately seen as someone with more social standing than the person who answers ‘supermarket cashier’. People today respect people who are rich and who have ‘made it in the world’. Although at the time of Pride and Prejudice, money inherited from a rich, important family was considered preferable to money made through work or trade in the manner of the Bingleys, the great value placed on wealth has varied little. People in the upper and middle classes were expected to behave in certain ways: namely, they were expected to be a lady or a gentleman. As Austen shows, however, that being an aristocrat by no means guaranteed that one was truly a lady or a gentleman. Both ladies and gentlemen were expected to be considerate to others, respectful towards those less powerful than themselves, courteous, and in control of their manners and appearance at all times. Flaunting one’s power was seen as rude and arrogant, and control over outward emotion was imperative. One of the primary examples of how Austen shows the values associated with a gentleman occurs with regard to Elizabeth’s early reactions to Darcy. Although rich, Darcy’s behavior proves that money is not enough to ensure respect. In spite of the initial admiration he is given at the Longbourn ball, his popularity waned quickly: He was looked at with great admiration for about half the evening, till his manners gave a disgust which turned the tide of his popularity; for he was discovered to be proud, to be above his company, and above being pleased; and not all his large estate in Derbyshire could then save him from having a most forbidding, disagreeable countenance, and being unworthy to be compared with his friend. (14) Darcy’s pride and his sense of superiority are considered rude and ungentlemanly behavior, and no amount of money or fine looks can save him from falling into disgrace with the people of Hertfordshire. Later, when Darcy first proposes to Elizabeth, she shocks him when she angrily exclaims that â€Å"had [he] behaved in a more gentleman-like manner† (168), then she may have felt concern in refusing him. She goes on to say that from almost the moment they met, â€Å"[his] manners [impressed her] with the fullest belief of [his] arrogance, [his] conceit, and [his] selfish disdain of the feelings of others† (168) and made him â€Å"the last man in the world whom [she] could ever be prevailed on to marry† (168). For Darcy, being told that he has not acted as a gentleman is a harsh shock, and he realizes that he must change his behavior. Later in the book, Darcy’s true nature as a gentleman is revealed when Elizabeth goes to Pemberley. His housekeeper, Mrs. Reynolds, describes him as â€Å"the best landlord, and the best master† (213), and she has nothing but praise for him. When Darcy arrives at Pemberley, he proves himself to be courteous and well-mannered, and Elizabeth is amazed at â€Å"his behavior, so strikingly altered† (216). In Austen’s world, merely being born an aristocrat does not make someone a lady or a gentleman. Lady Catherine de Bourgh is a prime example of the ill-breeding that can be found in people of high class and wealth. She is a very rich, upper-class widow who owns a great deal of land and who has a great deal of power over her tenants. Her behavior, however, is not at all befitting of a lady. She is rude and inconsiderate, as she proves when Elizabeth visits her and later when she tries to force Elizabeth not to marry Darcy. When Elizabeth visits Rosings, Lady Catherine talks constantly and â€Å"in so decisive a manner as proved that she was not used to having her judgment controverted† (145). She exerts firm control over her tenants, and she spends a great deal of time telling them how to run their households, as can be seen when she â€Å"enquired into Charlotte’s domestic concerns familiarly and minutely, and gave her a great deal of advice, as to the management of them all† (145). Austen satirizes Lady Catherine by presenting her unpleasantness in a near-comical manner. Mr. Collins, too, is certainly not a gentleman. While he attempts to act in a courteous manner, he evidently has very little grasp on the nuances of society, as can be seen when he introduces himself to Mr. Darcy and is ridiculed for doing so by the rest of the party. He is a figure of constant mockery, and the other characters in the novel look down upon him. Elizabeth is quite horrified by his mangled attempt at proposing to her, when he proves himself to be inconsiderate of her feelings and lacking any understanding of how to act towards a woman. He goes as far as to remind her of her father’s eventual death, claiming that she should marry him for that reason, and he dreadfully misinterprets her refusal to marry him as her â€Å"wish of increasing [his] love by suspense† (101). He also constantly flaunts his connections to Lady Catherine and he spends a great deal of time talking about how much money she has. On the other side of the spectrum, however are the Gardiners. The Gardiners are from a low-class background and they live in a trade district of London. In spite of their low birth, however, they prove to be among the most admirable characters in the book. They are both kind-hearted and well-mannered, and when Lydia runs away, Mr. Gardiner does his best to assist the Bennets. Mr. Collins, on the other hand, merely sends a letter telling them that â€Å"the death of [their] daughter would have been a blessing in comparison† (262) and blaming the Bennets for Lydia’s poor upbringing. The Gardiners act almost as surrogate parents for the Bennet daughters, and prove to be just and reasonable people. When Darcy meets the Gardiners at Pemberley, he is forced to rethink his former belief in the â€Å"the inferiority of [Elizabeth’s] connections† (168), since in spite of their low-birth he can plainly see the inherent goodness of manner that the Gardiners possess. The way in which Austen presents her various characters, and the ways in which other characters relate to each other, shows the conflicting values of her society. On the one hand, money is prized above everything and people from the lower-classes are looked down upon. On the other hand, a truly gentleman-like nature and a caring disposition are often prized above wealth. The behavior that was expected of women was very specific and highly stressed. Many conduct books that described the proper behavior for women were published in the late 18th century, and continued to have an impact on the women in the early 19th century. The Bennets are even shown to own a copy of James Fordyce’s Sermons for Young Women, when Mr. Collins reads a passage from the book in volume 1, chapter 14. Here, again, we see conflicting values. As the Longman Cultural Edition of Pride and Prejudice states, â€Å"[the sermons’] lessons are pointedly and disastrously ignored by the one character who needs to listen† (385). This person is, of course, Lydia Bennet, who could in fact do with a few lessons in propriety. On the other hand, as the book continues to state, â€Å"Austen, like many writers of her day, was clearly skeptical about the authoritativeness of conduct-book stands of femininity† (385). Education for young women at the time was usually minimal. They were taught â€Å"needlework, both for necessity and for pleasure; simple arithmetic; fine hand writing, which was considered a very elegant accomplishment; enough music to be able to sing and play†¦; a little drawing†¦; and some very scrappy ideas of history and geography† (Le Faye 87-88). For women educated at private seminaries, â€Å"the prime object was to instill Decorum, Manners, and Deportment† (Le Faye 90). The emphasis on proper manners in Pride and Prejudice is evident, and can be seen at the Netherfield Ball when Elizabeth is embarrassed by her mother’s and younger sisters’ improper behavior: â€Å"To Elizabeth it appeared, that had her family made an agreement to expose themselves as much as they could during the evening, it would have been impossible for them to play their parts with more spirit, or finer success† (95). Certainly, Lydia’s disgraceful behavior shows the norms and values of the time. In running off with a dishonorable man such as Wickham, she brings shame to her entire family. Sexual relations out of wedlock were taboo at the time; Fordyce, in his Sermons, speaks of the suffering parents feel â€Å"when a daughter†¦turns out unruly, foolish, wanton; when she disobeys her parents†¦; when she throws herself away on a man unworthy of her†¦Ã¢â‚¬ . Mr. Collins’ reaction, as stated earlier, would not have been uncommon at the time, especially among clergymen. Marriage was a crucial aspect of a woman’s life, and was indeed the only reputable way that she could live. Le Faye says, â€Å"Respectable young women could have no profession except matrimony, hence girls were expected to marry as soon as possible after they made their debut into society in their late teens† (113). There is a constant emphasis on marriage placed in Pride and Prejudice. The famous opening line of the book, â€Å"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife† (1) sets up this theme, which proves to be one of the central aspects of the novel. When Mr. Bingley first arrives in town, Mrs. Bennet’s primary concern is arranging for him to meet her daughters in the hopes that one of them would catch his eye. The numerous balls that the characters attend are designed largely for men and women to meet and interact in an environment that was appropriately chaperoned and controlled. Lydia and Kitty speak of nothing but meeting handsome men – particularly soldiers – and making themselves look as attractive as possible. James Thompson says, â€Å"Prospective mates are chosen as if they were objects, as if marriage itself is not a relation between people, but rather assumes ‘the fantastic form of a relation between things’† (155). Yet, as Austen shows, women nonetheless were relatively free to pick and choose the man they preferred among those considered worthy. Thompson goes on to say that â€Å"†¦in Austen, marriage is never fully represented as an institution, but rather is represented only as an individual practice†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (156). Elizabeth is, after all, was allowed to refuse Mr. Collins. While her father probably could have forced her into the marriage had he wished it, her choice in the matter remained an important factor. Austen considers Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s love to be ideal – unsurprising, considering that they are the protagonists, and the story revolves around their love. On the other hand, Charlotte Lucas’s marriage of necessity to Mr. Collins would have been common of the time, since pragmatic concerns for survival must sometimes overcome romantic wishes. The main tragedy in the match is considered by the other characters to be that she will never be truly happy in her marriage, but even Elizabeth, with her idealistic views of love, understands why Charlotte married Mr. Collins. Therefore, Austen shows how views of marriage in the early nineteenth century could be contradictory, sometimes revolving around love and sometimes being a matter of pragmatism. To a modern reader, the world of Jane Austen often seems very foreign, old-fashioned, and different from today. This is an understandable reaction, considering the differences in lifestyle and the comparative freedoms of our time. However, at the core, it seems that many things remain nearly unchanged. Women’s roles have undoubtedly changed, with women gaining much more freedom in regards to occupations, behavior, and legalities. However, there is still a great deal of social pressure exerted on women to be attractive and to find a man. The media constantly pushes an ‘ideal’ female body, and if a woman does not live up to that standard then she can have difficulty starting a relationship. The emphasis on marriage may be less today, but a woman is often still expected to marry and have children, and if she does not, then she is often pressured by her peers. Although the expectations of proper behavior and manners are more relaxed today, politeness, courtesy, and consideration of others’ feelings are still deemed essential in everyday life. These values are in many ways universal. Although they have been expressed differently throughout the ages, they have always existed in some form or another. Certainly, rudeness and impropriety have never been ideals. Therefore, while Pride and Prejudice certainly shows the society and lifestyles of its time, the novel serves also to depict moral and social values that continue to be relevant today.

Killer Whales Whales are giant creatures that live in the sea. They look like fish, but are not. Whales belong to the group of animals called mammals. Whales belong to the group of mammals called cetaceans, which comes from a Latin word meaning large sea animal. There are two major groups of whales. The first group is mysticeti (baleen whales), and the other isodontoceti (toothed whales). In the group odontoceti, there is a family of whales called delphinidae (dolphins and small toothed whales). In this report, I will focus on a species of whale that comes from this family, and that species is the killer whale, or also known as orcinus orca, or just orca. The largest and most striking of the dolphin family, the killer whale is one of the most fearsome predators of the deep. Killer whales are basically the same shape as fish, but they differ in many ways. One of the most obvious differences is the tail fin. Fish have vertical tail fins, while whales have horizontal tail fins. One of the most distinctive features of orcas is the tall, wide dorsal fin located on its back. In females, the dorsal fin can grow to about 2 feet high. It is falcate (hooked or curved). In males, the dorsal fin is triangular in shape and can grow up to about 6 feet high. Another distinctive feature of killer whales is that they possess a sleek, black and white pigmentation pattern. A white patch is located above and behind the eye. An extensive white ventral patch extends onto the flanks (sides). There is a gray saddle behind the dorsal fin, which is black at birth. (Hoyt, Pg. 32) At birth, orcas are about 2.1 to 2.4 meters long and weigh about 180 kilograms. When they are adults, males grow to about 9.5 meters long weighing 8 tons or more. Females grow to 8.2 meters long and weigh 4-6 tons. Orcas have robust and graceful bodies with a conical or rounded head. (Hoyt, Pg. 97) It has no distinct beak. They have straight mouthlines. Another physical attribute of killer whales, besides having a tall dorsal fin, is that killer whales have large, paddle-shaped flippers. These flippers are 2-3 times larger in males than they are in females. Killer whales are very large physical specimens. Being known as a fearsome hunter with killer instinct, it would be interesting to know what a killer whales diet consists of. The orca resembles the great white shark in its predatory skill and range of food. They eat seabirds, turtles, fishes, including sharks, whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and sea lions. These hunters feed in groups of two to twenty animals. They can even kill baleen whales much larger then themselves. They have 10 to 13 teeth on each side of each jaw, which helps in their feeding. Though killer whales sometimes attack dolphins, seals, and other whales larger than themselves, but they have not been known to attack people, although there have been documented cases of killer whale attacks. Throughout the ages, whales have lost some of the characteristics of mammals. Mammals have hair covering their bodies. Whales have only a few stiff hairs on their heads. Mammals have four legs. A whale has no hind legs. The only traces that they remain are two tiny hipbones. The front legs have developed into flippers, which are used for steering or keeping its balance. Although killer whales share the same characteristics as mammals, they also have special features that allow them to live in the water. Whales have many special characteristics suited for living in the water. Living in water enables them to reach enormous sizes. Companies rely on managers and other employees to cultivate investors, and its expected that employees will leverage these connections to benefit corporate interests. Some workers also use the perceived value of these transactional relations to ensconce themselves within the organization, making them difficult to dislodge. Experts in the field of finance call this a  dynamic capital structure. For example, a mutual-fund manager with a track record of producing consistent returns and retaining large corporate investors may use those relationships (and the implied threat of losing them) as a means of earning more compensation from management. Noted finance professors  Andrei Shleifer  of Harvard University and  Robert Vishny  of University of Chicago describe the problem this way:   By making manager-specific investments, managers can reduce the probability of being replaced, extract higher wages and larger prerequisites from shareholders, and obtain more latitude in determining corporate strategy. Risks Over time, this can affect  capital structure decisions, which in turn affects the way in which shareholders and the managers opinions affect the way a company is run. Managerial entrenchment can reach all the way to the C-suite. Plenty of companies with sliding stock prices and shrinking market shares have been unable to dislodge powerful CEOs whose best days are well behind them. Investors may abandon the company, making it vulnerable to a hostile takeover. Workplace morale can also suffer, prompting talent to leave or for toxic relationships to fester.  A manager who makes purchasing or investment decisions based on personal bias, rather in a companys interests, can also  cause  statistical discrimination. In extreme circumstances, experts say, management may even turn a blind eye to unethical or illegal business behavior, such as insider trading or collusion, in order to retain an employee who is entrenched. How to beat writers block How to beat writers block Someone once said that writing is easy. You just sit at your keyboard and wait till the beads of blood form on your forehead. For anyone who has ever suffered from writers block (and thats all of us), this will be a familiar scenario. It doesnt have to be that way though: you can beat writers block. But first you need to realise what causes it. Fight the fear Usually its down to two things: fear and lack of information. You dont have to dislike a subject to fear writing about it. In fact, your document could be about something that you find fascinating and it might still cause you problems. The trouble is that we worry that as soon as we put fingers to keyboard, reality will set in. Were afraid that it wont be perfect, that people may disagree with us or that well mess it up. Well, heres the first truth: all those fears might come true. And heres the second: it doesnt matter. Yes, it doesnt matter if its not perfect. In fact, nothing is ever perfect. The key is to realise that success is not perfection. To misquote General George Patton, better to have an imperfect report today than a perfect one in six weeks time. Because if you dont write it at all, it doesnt matter how much potential your document has. And what could be more galling than avoiding writing a perfect document and losing out to someone who wrote an imperfect one? Get what you need If fear isnt the issue, then probably its that you dont know what to write. In other words, you lack information. So get it. Perhaps you dont know what your reader expects. If so, then filling out a reader-profile questionnaire should help. (You can download one here.) And if youre still not sure, why not ask your reader or someone who knows them better than you do some well-targeted questions? Be sure to think the topic through first though, to show that youre not just being lazy. Brainstorm all that you know already with a mind map or some similar tool then put question marks against all topics that need a little more research. Whatever it is you need to know, acknowledge that, then go and find out. A few words of warning though: make sure you really do need to know it, and that youre not just being a perfectionist. Remember, success is not perfection. Kick-start your writing Finally, here are a few practical tips to get you going: Plan first. Planning can be a great way to ease yourself into the writing itself. Besides, its critical to separate the thinking from the writing, otherwise your document could end up a jumbled mess that makes sense only to you. Planning first does exactly that. Pick a leading task. Sitting and stewing will only increase your stress and muddle your thinking. So pick something that you need to do before you can write such as launching your word-processing program or opening the folder that contains the information you need. Then do that first. This will begin to put you in action mode, and make the writing itself easier. Planning is a good leading task, incidentally (see above). Set a time. Pick a time to start writing, and do your leading task just beforehand. As the time to write approaches, you should start to feel energised and able to get going. Pick an introduction. There are four types of introduction, and picking one of these types gives you (and your reader) an instant in. For instance, the Historical intro type contrasts what used to happen last year/decade or whenever with whats happening now, and creates a real sense of movement in your readers mind. Give yourself a time limit. If after all this, youre still paralysed with fear, then simply set yourself a time limit. Resolve to write for five minutes and only five minutes. This usually works where all other methods fail. After all, how bad can five minutes be? What usually happens with the last technique is that you start writing more quickly as the time limit approaches which sets you up nicely for writing the rest of the document. You need to be honest for this method to work though. So do allow yourself to stop after five minutes if youre really not happy. Then set a time to do another five minutes. You almost certainly wont need many five minutes sessions before youre in full flow.

In an international economy, knowledge - and knowledge of language - is power. Knowing a second language is more valuable than ever. I believe that citizens who speak English and another language will be a great resource for our nation in the coming years. To that end, I am encouraging schools in the United States to adopt the dual language approach, which we also sometimes refer to as "English plus one." This approach challenges young people to meet high academic standards in two languages. To give students and teachers every opportunity to succeed, President Clinton and Vice President Gore have proposed the largest increase ever in the U.S. education budget. We are working to create alternatives and offer intensive help to students who are struggling to pass high-stakes tests. I predict our schools will be open to students and adults for longer hours, providing access to computers for families that cannot afford their own personal computers and classes for adults who are seeking to improve their careers. Public education will be less about a fixed location and a fixed schedule, and much more about learning anytime and anywhere. Technology -- electronic learning --will change every aspect of U.S. education Across the United States, on every level of activity, education policies are subjects of discussion and debate among our citizens. We believe that the nation's education policies must change to reflect the increasing importance of education, the pervasiveness of technology and changes in student enrollment. A glimpse toward the future suggests that charter schools will become more prevalent in the United States. Although they use public funds, charter schools operate with more freedom and flexibility than typical public schools. The Clinton Administration has supported, and continues to support, charter schools and other innovations that give parents more choices in public schools. Robyn CampbellCampbell 1 English 101 Professor Beckham March 19, 2013 Traditional Students vs. Non Traditional Students A non traditional student will transition into college better than a traditional student due to allotted responsibility and independence on their part. A non traditional student has a more serious approach where as a traditional student lacks focus in their first steps as an adult. The demographic of a student has changed over the years. A college student is not typically eighteen years old and living in a dorm on campus anymore.A college student is over the age of twenty five and a single parent in some cases. They have family and financial obligations and possibly a full time job. Some may not even possess a high school diploma, but a GED. Both traditional and non traditional students have responsibilities outside of college. While the majority of students right out of high school will likely only have a part time job, students twenty five and older will be juggli ng far more. A traditional student will continue to live with parents and not worry too much financially.As a non traditional student, not only will most have a full time job, but a family to care for, a mortgage, and a car payment on top of the class and homework time. It is estimated that only 13% of younger students are currently working vs. 60% of non traditional students (ACSFA 17). Although young adults have less baggage entering into college, they tend to think more socially and independent than academically. This brings up the topic of reputation. As a non traditional student, starting college can be frightening.Most older students are friendly, but outgoing and wanting to make friends with everyone in class is not top priority on the list. As a young adult transitions from high school, a social atmosphere, college is considered to be no different. Some students from certain high schools will attend the same college so social hour continues. As far as a non traditional stude nt, grades are more important than making a best friend or being invited to parties. As a younger student, social life could set you back. As an older student, this has already been achieved and allows for more participation due to more life experience.There are challenges in life that can throw anyone off the right track. Unfortunately, adding college into the mix only makes it that much harder. Challenges can be very much related to responsibility and how a student is affected socially. Non traditional students worry about not fitting in where traditional students worry more about making it to class on time, wether even at all. As a student returning to college after several years, there is anxiety and a fear that this is the last chance to make something of yourself.If you just got out of high school, chances are there was hardly any studying going on there, so why start now? At the same time an older student needs to juggle school, a job, and family, a younger student needs to j uggle school, a job, and maintain a social life. As a young adult, the social life is what is the most distracting, leading to missed classes and poor grades. Transitioning from high school to college can be just as difficult as being out of high school for several years and starting college. Independence is the key part of starting college.As a young adult, this means adjusting to your own schedule and now being able to do as you please. As an older adult, this means more responsibility added to the list. Age difference will determine on adjusting to college. Some will argue that the young crowd is very immature. They may adjust socially, but they do not see this as an adult experience. Arriving on time may have been a slap on the wrist in the past, but what they don't realize is now it's nothing but time and money. Someone who has had independence for longer than a year is going to see college similar to having started a career already.Focusing in class and on assignments is harde r for a traditional student than a non traditional student. After taking care of social time at night, a younger student is less likely to come to class, let alone pay attention. Due to lack of time because of the overwhelming feeling of too much going on, young adults take less time to complete assignments to the best of their ability. As a non traditional student, school comes first. Good grades are important and attendance is needed to maintain the required academic standards.The only thing on a young students mind is getting by with the bare minimum and getting a job somewhere. Students who have spent most of their working days at a dead end job, barely supporting themselves and their family are looking for a career to help them adjust to the economy as it changes frequently. Focus goes along with how a student does academically. Although some may say, non traditional students have less time to study, traditional students make it less of a priority. To do well academically, stud y time is required. Time management is very important to achieve this on top of all other aspects of life.A non-traditional student does not have the luxury of wasting time. This is a time to learn and may be their last time to work hard and have a decent career. The government offers financial aid to almost everyone. Parents of this past generation have made sure they went to college themselves and were able to provide for their children. Several scholarships during high school are given out. That is not the case for older, more independent students. There isn't a free ride involved when you go back to college after years of working a full time job.In Marion Bowl's, Experiencing the barriers: non-traditional students entering higher education, she states that these financial hurdles delay the progress of non traditional students (p. 157). There isn't any help from parents. As an older adult, realizing the amount of money that is being used for your education and knowing it will com e out of your pocket wether now or in the future, makes it that much more important to do well. It is not fun to pay for college later on and have nothing to show for it. With the continued help of our college professors and mentors, non traditional students will do better than they are now in school.Doing things the old fashion way may be the route taken, but it allows for proper learning, reading, and writing. Taking a short cut just to get the work done does not necessarily mean a good grade or a future career. Bullying has been finally pointed out and many voices have been heard. Growing up before in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s the term bullying was not recognized or it was ignored. In today’s social living bullying is not tolerated anywhere. The cause and effect are extreme. We have to see the warning signs, of change in moods, bad behaviors, or no signs at all. Bullying is a bad behavior were others are mistreated and are injured physically or mentally. It does not only happen in young children but also in young adults and adults. A child is defenseless when innocent and when they’re not exposed to bad behavior. One of the reasons of others bullying is a low self-esteem.
